What is asbestos? Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that can break into tiny fibers that are invisible to the naked eye. Asbestos is extremely resistant to fire and heat and has been used in products for more than two thousand years. In the construction industry, asbestos was used in more than 3,000 building products.
Asbestos fibers can be released when disturbed and can be potentially harmful if inhaled. Exposure to asbestos can cause disabling or fatal diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and other cancers, whose symptoms may not appear for more than 20 years. By reducing a person’s exposure to asbestos, the chances of becoming ill are reduced.
It is a common misconception that all products that contain asbestos are banned for use in the United States, and many people are surprised that you can still find asbestos in products manufactured today.
